How to prepare your caravan for winter

A practical off-season guide for protecting touring caravans, static caravans and holiday lodges while they are unoccupied.

Winter preparation is about preventing small problems from becoming expensive ones. Touring caravans and static units have different needs, so it is important to follow the correct guidance for your type of caravan.

Start with the instructions that apply to your unit. Your caravan manufacturer, insurer and holiday park may set specific winterisation requirements. Use qualified professionals for gas, electrical or specialist plumbing work.

FOR EVERY CARAVAN OR LODGE

Remove anything that could attract vermin.

Rats and mice can cause serious damage to soft furnishings, wiring and stored belongings. Remove all food rather than assuming sealed packets will be safe, then leave the interior clean and dry.

  • Remove all food, drinks, pet food and crumbs - including unopened packets.
  • Empty bins and thoroughly clean cupboards, drawers, cooking areas and floors.
  • Remove bedding and towels, or store dry soft furnishings in sealed containers.
  • Check for small gaps around service entry points, without blocking safety ventilation.
  • Clear gutters, roof channels and drainage points.
  • Check exterior seals, windows, doors and rooflights for visible deterioration.
  • Photograph the exterior and any existing damage before leaving.
  • Keep your park, insurer and emergency contact details accessible.
TOURING CARAVANS

Prepare a movable caravan for long-term storage.

A touring caravan needs attention to its water system, tyres, battery, gas supply and towing equipment. It must remain securely supported throughout storage.

  • Drain the water system, toilet and water heater exactly as the manufacturer directs.
  • If the manufacturer and storage site permit it, use proper levelling equipment to create a very slight rearward fall so rain can run from the roof instead of pooling.
  • Check tyre condition and pressure and follow the manufacturer's long-term storage instructions.
  • Remove or maintain the leisure battery according to its instructions.
  • Secure gas cylinders and isolate services as directed.
  • Clean and dry the awning before storage and protect towing equipment and electrical connections.
  • Secure the hitch and steadies and arrange periodic winter checks.
About the storage angle

A slight rearward fall may help water run off instead of pooling, but only do this where the caravan manufacturer's guidance and storage-site rules permit it. Use stable, purpose-made levelling equipment and never improvise unsafe supports.

STATIC CARAVANS & LODGES

Follow the park's winter procedure.

Static units should remain correctly supported and level. Their water systems, roof drainage, ventilation and park access arrangements usually need more attention than their position.

  • Confirm the holiday park's closing dates, access rules and winterisation requirements.
  • Arrange a professional water-system drain-down where required and keep evidence for your insurer.
  • Check gutters, downpipes, roof joints and decking drainage.
  • Clean exterior panels and accessible roof areas to remove algae, grime and organic contamination.
  • Secure doors and windows while preserving the ventilation required by the manufacturer.
  • Confirm whether electricity, water and gas should remain connected or be isolated.
  • Move valuables out of sight and secure outdoor furniture and loose decking items.
  • Arrange occasional inspections for storm damage, leaks, pests and damp.
BEFORE RETURNING IN SPRING

Inspect before reconnecting services.

Check for leaks, damp, pest activity and storm damage. Recommission the water, gas and electrical systems as required, then inspect the roof drainage, exterior seals, safety equipment and - for touring caravans - the tyres and towing equipment.

Booking an exterior clean early can also help you identify visible issues and prepare the caravan before the main holiday season becomes busy.
